Afghanistan: Conflict and Development
Beginning in early 2010, American troops will begin arriving in Afghanistan as part of President Obama's escalation of military forces in the region. But as experts discuss the military strategies and political implications of the move, we'll turn our attention to development issues there, especially how women may be affected by an increase in military force.

Esther Hyneman taught English and American literature, Women's Studies and Multicultural Studies at Long Island University. Following her retirement in 2001, she began attending meetings of Women for Afghan Women, and is currently the organization’s principal grantwriter and serves on its board of directors. She has traveled to Afghanistan numerous times, most recently from January thru July of this year, and will return to the country for five months next week.

Alternative Agriculture in China
Issues of food security and alternative agriculture are becoming increasingly important with an expanding global population. The environmental impact of large agribusiness and the effects of climate change on growing seasons, the predictability of the weather, and food prices are having uneven effects in villages, cities, and countries around the world. These topics are sure to be on the agenda at the UN conference on climate change, which kicked off earlier this week in Copenhagen. So what alternatives do communities have to the industrial model of farming and food production? What are people doing to ensure local access to food?

Chang Tianle is the China Program Officer for the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. She has worked as a journalist in China, most recently with China Development Brief, has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Shanghai International Studies University, and studied international affairs at the New School in New York. She is based in Beijing.

Composer and Percussionist Susie Ibarra
Susie Ibarra blends drums, electronics, vocals, and kulintang into a unique sound. She composes for and performs both solo and in collaborative groups and ensembles, including Electric Kulintang, a collaboration with her husband, Cuban percussionist and composer Roberto Rodriguez. She will be performing a solo show this Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Roulette in Manhattan.

Composer, improviser and percussionist Susie Ibarra is a Yamaha, Vic Firth and Paiste Artist and a 2008 Recipient of the Asian Cultural Council Rockefeller Fellowship. Her music can be heard on over forty recordings. Recent works include War Horses music by Electric Kulintang with Poetry of Yusef Komunyaka, a commission for the Isamu Noguchi Museum 2007; Summer Fantasy and Folklore music for Susie Ibarra Quartet commissioned for MoMa Summergarden and Jazz at Lincoln Center 2008; and Pintados Dream, a concerto for drums and orchestra with visual art by Makoto Fujimura commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra and premiered at Zankel Carnegie Hall NY 2007.
