NY Suspends Secure Communities Program

Last Wednesday, June 1, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo suspended Secure Communities, a program that requires local police to check the fingerprints of anyone arrested to determine immigration status. After months of pressure from immigrant rights groups citing concerns of racial profiling and unlawful detention, New York became the second state after Illinois to opt-out. Mizue Aizeki of the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights and Michelle Fei of the Immigrant Defense Project join us to discuss this rare victory for immigrant rights.
