Immigrants Challenge Same-Sex Marriage Ban

Last week, five lesbian and gay couples filed a lawsuit challenging the section of the Defense of Marriage Act which prohibits couples from gaining legal residence for a same-sex spouse. Although an increasing number of states have legalized gay marriage, its lack of recognition by the federal government can mean deportation for a non-citizen spouse. We speak with Tom Plummer, a staff attorney with Immigration Equality, the organization that filed the lawsuit, and with Takako Ueda, one of the plaintiffs.

Accelerando: Artist Vijay Iyer's New Album

Pianist and composer Vijay Iyer has been hailed as one of the most innovative and visionary jazz musicians on the contemporary scene. His new trio album, Accelerando, a visceral commentary on the physical reality of music, features both original compositions and interpretations of pieces by Duke Ellington, Henry Threadgill, and Michael Jackson. APF's Leyla Mei sat down recently with the Grammy-nominated artist for a wide-ranging conversation on Suzuki parenting, the meaning of perfection, and how musical collaboration can feel like hanging out with one's cousins. His trio will be performing this week at Birdland.
