Summer Music Edition with Dirty Beaches
Last year, Dirty Beaches, the solo project of Taiwanese Canadian musician Alex Hungtai Zhang, released his third album to great critical acclaim. Badlands, which has been described as “squeezing the sounds of early rock ‘n roll and 1950s music through a lo-fi, distortion-drenched filter,” is a concept album about the romance of travel and the open road, and was inspired by an idea of what his Taiwanese father was like in his youth, as well as his own travels over the years.
We spend the hour talking with Dirty Beaches about Badlands, nostalgia, writing the film score for a documentary about Taiwan, and oscillator punk from China. And of course, we’ll also listen to some music, with picks from Dirty Beaches himself.
Dirty Beaches is the stage name of Taiwanese Canadian musician Alex Hungtai Zhang. His third album Badlands was released by Zoo Records in 2011. Find his music at dirtybeaches.bandcamp.com
