Lois-Ann Yamanaka: Behold the Many

Disease, poverty, and spirituality in early 20th century Hawaii form the backdrop to LOIS-ANN YAMANAKA's latest novel, Behold the Many, which will be published in paperback this month. The book follows three young Japanese-Portuguese girls whose parents send them to a Catholic orphanage to recover from tuberculosis. Yamanaka's lush, descriptive prose illuminates the fecund landscape of Hawaii. APF collective member Leyla Mei spoke with the author about ghosts, religion, the uses of pidgin, and how to silence one's critics.
