NYC Immigrant Labor: Taxi Workers and Devi

Audio not available
On last week’s Asia Pacific Forum, we heard about the lawsuit filed last month by workers at Manhattan’s upscale Indian restaurant Devi. Workers there had charged owner Rakesh Aggarwal with numerous labor violations. Well last week, Aggarwal unexpectedly shut the restaurant. Tune in to hear what workers are planning in response. And we’ll get a last-minute status report on tomorrow’s planned strike by taxi drivers, called by the New York Taxi Workers Alliance to protest the city’s requirement that drivers install GPS systems in all cabs.

The India-U.S. Nuclear Pact

Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, Howard Zinn, and Vijay Prashad are all opposed to the pending U.S.-India nuclear pact. What is it, you ask? The bilateral nuclear deal is a remarkably underreported story, although it may set back the important cause of nuclear disarmament and help to destabilize South Asia. Activist scholar Prashad will break down the deal for us.

Queer in Korea

Korea has a vibrant and growing LGBT movement that is, by most accounts, only a dozen years old. One of its leaders, 29-year-old JUNG YOL, sat down with Asia Pacific Forum to talk about what it’s like to identify as queer and to fight for social change in a country that is so openly prejudiced against sexual minorities. Tune in to hear a moving and inspiring conversation.

Vanaja: A New Film Set in South India

We hear from RAJNESH DOMALPALLI, the writer and director of Vanaja, which opened this past Friday in New York. Set in 1950s rural South India, the film tells the story of Vanaja, a young girl from a low caste fishing community who desires to be a classical dancer. What could be a standard "against the odds" fairytale becomes an examination of the complex ways in which caste, class, and gender hierarchies operate.
